In 1827, Jim Bowie was attacked by four men in the famous sandbar fight. He was shot, stabbed, and beaten over the head with a club. Bowie, armed only with a big knife given to him by his brother Rezin, killed one and severely wounded two of the attackers. The legend of the Bowie knife was born. In later years, while traveling through Arkansas, Jim Bowie purchased a knife made by blacksmith James Black, who added the “clipped point” to the design.
