Uberti Firearms - History Repeats Itself

»Product Reviews

Left & Middle: To seat black powder loads in the cylinder of the single-action army and navy revolvers, the loading lever is freed from the latch and pulled downward. This causes the ramrod to move through the frame and ram the load home. Right: The frame cut-out and nipples in the rear of the cylinder of the 1861 Navy allow percussion caps to be seated.

Uberti revolvers include single action Army and Navy models designed by Colt.

The 1851 Navy was a scaled-up, .36 caliber version of the 1849 Pocket Navy. The handy, more powerful Colt revolvers immediately found a following among soldiers and civilians alike. The 1851 Navy revolvers were eventually adopted by both the U.S. and British military.

By the start of the Civil War, Colt had refined the Navy black powder firearms into sleek, streamlined weapons with improved loading levers. The 1861 Navy is often acclaimed as Colt’s most handsome pistol.

In the meantime, Colt worked to perfect his cap and ball revolver. The sleek 1860 Army was considered to be the ultimate combat handgun of the percussion era. The single action revolver was designed around a lightweight frame, but chambered for the more powerful .44-caliber ball. The first single action army models featured fluted cylinders, and later models incorporated belted cylinders for added strength and creeping loading levers for easier loading.
